Grade 4B PYP Exploring DNA and What Makes Us Unique
As part of their Who We Are unit, Grade 4B PYP learners explored the first line of inquiry, “Genetics shape our appearance.” Students began by investigating what makes each of us unique and how genetics influence our characteristics.
To deepen their understanding, learners conducted a strawberry DNA extraction experiment in the school biology laboratory. Working collaboratively, they followed the procedure, made observations and discussed their findings.
The inquiry continued in the classroom as students explored the structure and role of DNA before creating their own DNA models. Through this hands-on experience, learners developed their thinking, communication and collaboration skills while making connections to the central idea: “We can become better global citizens by respecting others for their differences.”
The experience helped students recognise that although we may share similarities, our differences are part of what makes each of us unique.
