Empowering Young Lifesavers: Age-Appropriate First Aid Training in the PYP
The Primary Years Programme community recently hosted a hands-on First Aid Training session for Grade 3 learners. Designed to build safety awareness, practical life skills, and personal responsibility, this interactive initiative is directly connected to the transdisciplinary theme, Who We Are, and the central idea that making healthy choices can influence well-being. To deliver this specialized training, the school welcomed a professional team of certified medical trainers. Structured according to modern American Heart Association guidelines, the sessions were held in small, focused class groups to ensure every participant received personalized instruction.
Throughout the interactive workshop, learners explored how to respond calmly, safely, and effectively in emergency situations. Through practical demonstrations and direct practice with training mannequins, medical equipment, and wound care materials, students covered essential emergency protocols. These included assessing personal safety, checking an injured person’s condition, dialing 112, and seeking adult support. Guided by medical professionals, participants practiced hand placement, body positioning, and correct chest compression technique on CPR manikins. Students also learned to address mild and severe choking using back blows and abdominal thrusts, as well as applying direct pressure with bandages to treat bleeding. The session concluded with simulated scenario practice, allowing learners to identify emergency problems and determine the correct sequence of life-saving steps.
In the PYP framework, physical health, safety, and community responsibility are closely interconnected. By learning how to recognize danger, call for help, and take correct action rather than remain inactive, Grade 3 learners embodied key attributes of global citizenship, demonstrating how informed choices directly support personal and community well-being. At the conclusion of the workshop, each participating student received a personal certificate acknowledging their training and commitment to building a safer, healthier community.
