European School Students Discuss Similarities and Differences between Film and Literature

On February 9, 2018, Tamar Tsagareli, Georgian Language and Literature teacher organized a discussion on similarities and differences between film and literature for grade 5A and 5B students. Students read a famous short story – “Magdana’s Donkey,” written by a prominent Georgian writer, Ekaterine Gabashvili. Irakli Jaoshvili, the Head of the European School TV, talked to students about the film adaptation of “Magdana’s Donkey,” discussed the art of cinematography and the process of turning books into movies.

The European School Joins 100th Anniversary Celebration of Tbilisi State University

On February 9, 2018, the European School teachers, Maia Melikishvili and Maia Tsenguashvili, along with grade 10-11 students, organized a conference dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University. The speakers recalled the complexity of historical period in which Goergian meritorious public figures managed to establish the very first Georgian university.

The European School Students Are Mastering Cuneiform Script

The European School students are trying their hand at Cuneiform Script. As Grade 7A students were covering ancient Mesopotamian civilizations in History, their teacher, Manana Shekiladze, decided to teach them Cuneiform script, invented by the Sumerians. In class, she provided students with Cuneiform script, matching Georgian letters and chunks of clay. First, students made tablets out of clay and then, carved their names into the surface in Georgian and in Cuneiform.

Lecture about History of Germany

Simon Hölscher, guest speaker from Germany, paid a visit to the European School and gave a lecture about Germany post World War One and Hitler’s rise to power pre -World War Two. Students who attended the lecture had already covered World War Two in their History class, so having a German perspective on this historical event was very culturally enriching for them.

Field trip in Experimentorium

On February the 13th our grade 10C class visited the Experimentorium- Museum of Entertaining Sciences with their Physics teacher – Ia Kurashvili. The museum has various exhibits, that demonstrate the laws of Physics, including: the basics of electricity (all about the nature of electricity), optics (light, color and vision) and acoustics (sound generation). Students had the opportunity to sit on nails, lift each other into the chair, catch thunder with their hands, draw on the sand, measure their screaming power, guess the secret of a glossy box as well as many other interesting activities!

I am a 21st Century Student

The European School teachers, Marina Melikidze and Maia Jokhadze jointly organized a class, "I am a 21st Century Student" for the grade 5 students of the Georgian Program. During the class, students worked on creating digital material and assessed the product against specific criteria.

Excursion - Georgian National Public Broadcaster

On February 7, third graders of our PYP sector visited the Georgian National Public Broadcaster. Students could see for themselves the different studios where they record all the programs. They then visited the main control room, and a very special museum, where they learned about the first cameras, equipment, voice recorders and many other things that are used during the creation of programs. This excursion showed our students that through the advancement of Technology the recording of TV programs has become so much easier!

Opening of the Einstein School

The European School signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with Kant Academy on February 9, 2018. Within the framework of the MoC, Einstein School is established at the European School for students aged 9-12. The Sunday school will help students develop creative thinking, leadership, effective communication skills, etc. The representatives of Kant Academy discussed the project details with students and parents. At the end of the meeting, the future students of the Sunday School took memorable pictures with their friend dressed as Albert Einstein.
