Student Council Field Trip to Vake Park: PYP Leaders in Action for the Planet
At the end of April, a truly meaningful experience happened for our Student Council as PYP leaders from each class came together for a special field trip dedicated to environmental responsibility and action. The destination was Vake Park, one of the city’s most beloved green spaces, where learning moved beyond the classroom and into real life.
For several weeks, students had been preparing for this trip by researching Earth Day, exploring its history, importance, and global message. They discussed how small, everyday actions can make a significant difference in protecting our planet and how leadership begins with personal responsibility. This field trip became the perfect opportunity to turn their knowledge into action.
As a united group, the Student Council students worked collaboratively to help keep the park clean by collecting litter and ensuring the environment was left better than they found it. Equipped with gloves, bags, and a strong sense of purpose, the students demonstrated care for nature through hands-on action. Their enthusiasm and teamwork were truly inspiring to witness.
Beyond cleaning the park, students also took time to observe their surroundings-trees, plants, birds, and people enjoying nature. They engaged in short interviews with visitors, asking thoughtful questions about Earth Day and what individuals can do to protect the environment. These conversations helped students develop confidence, communication skills, and a deeper understanding of community involvement in sustainability.
Reflection was an essential part of the experience. Students discussed what they observed, how their actions contributed to a healthier environment, and how they could continue promoting eco-friendly habits in their daily lives and at school.
We were also joined by our wonderful wellbeing team member, Ms. Taso, whose support and encouragement throughout the trip helped students feel motivated, safe, and inspired. Her presence added warmth and positivity to the experience, reminding students that caring for the planet also connects to caring for ourselves and others.
This field trip was not only about cleaning a park, but it was also about empowering young leaders to understand that they can create change. Through collaboration, action, and reflection, our PYP Student Council members truly embodied the spirit of Earth Day and demonstrated what it means to be responsible global citizens.
