Who We Are

As part of their unit “Who We Are,” grade 5 students are inquiring into the changesn humans undergo throughout their lives and the elements of our identity. In the Georgian lessons the students had the amazing opportunity to be the first to read the book “My African grandmother” by Mariam Tsiklauri as it is yet unpublished. After reading the book, students reflected and illustrated the characters from the book and expressed the main idea in a form of a comic. Niniko Mikaberidze, who is an illustrator of children’s books, helped the students creating their illustations. On this meeting art teacher was helping the students to create their own comics.
As part of their action, students met the authour of the book – Mariam Tsiklauri and shared their opinion and impressions about the book. Grade 5 students wrote a poem together with the author using the new words and vocabulary from the book. With the help of our music teacher, students turned the poem into rap and created music for the book “my African grandmother”. Students were inquirers and strengthened their thinking and communication skills while working on this book. The book was connected to the unit of inquiry as it covered topics related to personal relationships, identity and our roles and responsibilities in the society.  Students analyzed different perspectives and made real-life connections.
