Young Talents Shine; Calligraphy Finals – Celebrating Georgia’s Rich Cultural Legacy

May 30, Tbilisi — In a vibrant celebration of Georgia’s artistic heritage, 19 talented finalists of the ASAS calligraphy competition gathered at the Calligraphers’ Association for an unforgettable workshop and awards ceremony. The event marked the culmination of a week-long selection process, highlighting the cultural importance and timeless beauty of Georgian script.

Led by the distinguished calligrapher Davit Maisuradze, the workshop immersed students in the profound world of Georgian calligraphy. Participants explored the history, evolution, and artistry of Georgian writing, and then channeled their creativity into crafting original designs based on the iconic phrase from The Knight in the Panther’s Skin:
“He who does not seek a lover is his own enemy.”

The atmosphere was charged with passion and respect for the written word as students brought ancient script to life with their personal interpretations.

Following the workshop, Maisuradze revealed the eagerly awaited results of the competition:

Winners – Military Writing Nomination

  • 1st Place: Anamaria Alavidze (Grade 6A)
  • 2nd Place: Tekla Saltkhutsishvili (Grade 6B)
  • 3rd Place: Elene Oniani (Grade 7)

Winners – Nuskha-Khutsi Script Nominations

  • Best Copyist: Luka Naskidashvili (Grade 8)
  • Best Illustrator: Lizi Mezvrishvili (Grade 8)

All participants and winners were honored with certificates, custom-crafted thematic prizes from the Fablab, and professional calligraphy instruments—symbolic tools for continuing their artistic journeys.

The project was brought to life through the dedication of Georgian language and literature teachers: Tekla Beradze, Shushanik Asatiani, and Ilia Tsetskhladze, whose vision fostered a renewed appreciation for Georgia’s cultural roots among the youth.

This inspiring initiative not only showcased exceptional young talent but also underscored the enduring legacy of Georgian calligraphy—proving that the strokes of the past continue to shape the voices of the future.
